Ellen Kim (Thematica)
Mixed Media Photo-Collage Artist
I live within walking distance from Mount Gretna, and consider Mount Gretna our home.
After a devastating fire at my family home a few years ago. I’ve begun the process of cataloging the photos that remain, and breathing new life into some of my favorite photos. For example I created a collage of my great grandfather and uncle. In Arnold Lobel’s beloved classic Days with Frog and Toad, there is a story in which Frog leaves a note that he wants to be alone. Toad doesn’t take the hint, instead he brings Frog, lunch which of course leads to disaster, but all is made right in the end. My favorite quote is on the last page; “Frog and Toad stayed on the island all afternoon. They ate wet sandwiches without ice tea. They were two close friends sitting alone together.” What a great picture of true friendship.
Proverbs 17:17 says “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” This photograph of my great grandfather and uncle captures that verse perfectly.
If you have a cherished family photo that you would like to breathe new life into. Or are seeking to reimagine the family photo wall to reflect, a fresher modern sensibility. I would love to work with you to create something truly personal.
I am Ellen Kim, a Lancaster county native creating under the artist name Thematica—a combination of the word thematic and the feminine suffix -ica. I aspire to create art with a feminine perspective, whimsy, and wisdom from the past.
