Don “Stone” Kensinger
Stone Artist
Lives in Mount Gretna.
Silt, sand, and magma transform into rocks through the processes of sedimentation, metamorphosis, extreme heat, and intense pressure. Rocks transform into sacred stones once we acknowledge their journeys, feel the energy they emit, and when we appreciate that their unique qualities will far outlast our lifetimes.
As I select, attach, stain, and seal each stone, I am struck that on occasion, usually when silently toiling in my cellar workspace, that I experience a sense of sacredness, recognizing my minuteness, my brief existence, and my mortality. I trust others will discover meaning in my art, prompt them to reflect on what they see and feel and use it as a catalyst to create meaningful stories.
When I create, I strive to do so not only for present pleasure, but for the future as well. Hopefully, my work will be valued not only by my contemporaries but also by our descendants. Each of us will eventually move on. I long that my grandchildren and their lineages may look upon these creations, treasure them and whisper, “See, this was done for us.”
In addition to the pieces I have completed, I am open to creating work on commission. Those who feel a connection to my art are welcome to contact me to learn more or to acquire a piece.
